From Singapore to India and beyond: Tech in Asia Studios’ global footprint

Just like how ice cream parlors have a huge selection of flavors that leave you spoiled for choice, Asia, too, is home to so many different countries, each with their own unique cultures, history, languages, and beliefs.

At Tech in Asia, we’re glad to have witnessed this diversity first-hand through our work with many businesses and organizations throughout Asia and beyond.

Our site has over 18 million views and more than 3 million active monthly users – of which 2 in 3 are key decision makers – spread all across the globe.

While Tech in Asia has been around for over a decade, Tech in Asia Studios – its in-house agency – was only officially launched in its current form in 2019. Since then, it has served more than 700 customers globally, with over 550 of them in Asia.

From rising unicorns in Southeast Asia to US-based firms looking to engage with the region, we’re honored to play a role in the story of Asia’s growth by helping companies of all stripes and sizes build up their brands.

If you’re looking to connect with Asia’s tech ecosystem, see if it makes sense to work with us.

Here’s a closer look at the projects we’ve done over the years across different markets and media.

1. Singapore

Singapore-based organizations have made up the largest proportion of our customers. We’ve had the pleasure of working with numerous rising startups such as Geniebook, Fraxtor, and Kyber Network, as well as some of Southeast Asia’s biggest tech companies, including Grab and Sea Group.

Grab has trusted us with numerous campaigns over the years. We produced explainer articles with embedded animated videos that peeled back the layers to look at Grab’s business operations, such as its design principles and how it fulfills orders as efficiently as possible. Plus there were the International Women’s Day projects in 2021 and 2022.

The output of our partnership also included employer branding articles, zooming in on Grab’s “sea turtle” hires and its R&D center in India, as well as explorations of Grab’s other services such as GrabDefence, the super app’s B2B fraud detection and prevention division.

As for Sea Group, we delved into how Shopee, its ecommerce unit, has supported the region’s MSMEs, especially those in rural areas. Aside from articles, we also produced newsletter ads and covered Shopee’s events, such as the Shopee Brands Summit in 2022.

We’re also proud to have worked with government agencies such as Enterprise Singapore and the Infocomm Media Development Authority to further the growth of the city-state’s startup and tech scene.

2. Indonesia

We count some of Indonesia’s tech giants among our customers. Bukalapak, for instance, has teamed up with us to produce a variety of content over the years, ranging from the journey of its president Teddy Oetomo into the startup world to the impact Mitra Bukalapak has had on MSMEs in Indonesia.

Also check out the comprehensive content we produced with Tokopedia – now a part of GoTo Group – exploring different aspects of ecommerce operations in Indonesia, such as the power of live shopping, the rise of Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, and even how Tokopedia has leveraged the Korean wave in its marketing.

Aside from tech companies, Tech in Asia Studios has shone the spotlight on local conglomerates such as Telkomsel. In collaboration with McKinsey, we explored how the country’s largest telco digitalized and stayed relevant. Our articles also looked at two apps it was developing in partnership with the Boston Consulting Group to address real problems Indonesians face today.

VC firms have been a key part of our customer base in Indonesia as well – for example, East Ventures has been a long-time supporter of Tech in Asia (full disclosure: It’s one of our investors). It sponsored our annual pitching competition, Startup Arena, in 2021 and 2022. Through different articles, we discussed the VC’s investments in startups that are addressing environmental, social, and governance issues.

3. Malaysia

Tech in Asia Studios has worked with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and the Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre (MaGIC) – two government organizations supporting the growth of startups in the country.

With MDEC, we rolled out a comprehensive suite of articles that went deep into the country’s startup scene. We spoke with Jean-Francois Gauthier, founder and CEO of Startup Genome, to explore the potential of Malaysia’s startup ecosystem. How equity crowdfunding helped startups weather the pandemic and how Malaysia supports its digital creative content industry were among the topics we covered.

In partnership with MaGIC, we zoomed in on two key areas of growth: fintech and Industry 4.0. Through these articles, we spotlighted Malaysian startups that were making waves in these sectors, showcasing their stories and what they do to our audience.

Other clients include F&B firm Cravito, which helped restaurants in the country navigate Covid-19 restrictions and challenges, and Petronas Ventures, whose accelerator program FutureTech was featured in our article.

4. Vietnam

Vietnam’s been coming up on people’s radars in recent years, and we’re excited to be witnessing this growth first-hand.

Be Group, a homegrown ride-hailing service, is one of the startups we’ve profiled. We looked at how it managed to gain market share and carve out a niche for itself in Vietnam’s competitive ride-hailing scene, as well as covered the launch of Cake, its digital bank offering.

With ecommerce enabler BCA Solutions, we looked at the growing problems that online sellers face, and how the company could help address these hurdles.

And with CMC Global, we dove into the opening of CMC APAC in Singapore and explored the opportunities that the cloud holds for digital transformation, hence adding another piece to the larger story of growth and transformation in the region.

5. Thailand

Our project with SCB 10X demonstrated how the venture arm of the Siam Commercial Bank has enabled the use of blockchain in the fintech sector. Aside from highlighting SCB 10X’s investment thesis, we also profiled ApeBoard, one of its portfolio companies, through an article and a video.

In a similar vein, we partnered with Krungsri Finnovate, the corporate venture arm of Krungsri, one of Thailand’s largest banks. Through this write-up, we promoted the US$100 million private equity trust fund called Finnoventure Fund I, encouraging startups and potential investors alike to seek it out if it seemed like a good match.

6. Philippines

We had the pleasure of working with IP Ventures to produce Startup Frontiers: Philippines. For this in-depth coverage, we spoke to founders, investors, and other stakeholders to get a sense of where the Philippines is in terms of its tech and startup ecosystem, and what more needs to be done to drive it forward.

Also take a look at our collab with QuadX, which focuses on digital logistics solutions supporting ecommerce businesses. From telling the tale of a fisherman-turned-business owner to diving deep into the challenges plaguing microsellers during the pandemic, we helped outline the ways QuadX could make a difference and connect it with potential customers.

These are just some of the folks we’ve worked with within Southeast Asia alone – connect with us to see how we can support your growth and goals in Asia and beyond, or read on to learn about the other work we’ve done in Asia.

7. India

We’ve helped companies in India – another key startup ecosystem in Asia – to showcase how their products tackle real-world problems.

For example, a post-event article we produced for Freshworks touched uponthe value of frictionless customer experiences.

And for our annual Product Development Conference, cloud consultancy firm Searce came on board as a sponsor, bringing its expertise to our attendees. The article we produced for Searce not only helped the company raise its brand awareness, but it also provided our readers with valuable insights on the best practices for developing cloud strategies.

8. Taiwan

One of our long-term partners is Taiwan Mobile, one of Taiwan’s biggest telecom companies. It’s the sponsor behind The Offset, our monthly greentech newsletter that breaks down the biggest stories and trends in the sector, whether it’s electric vehicles, carbon emissions, or renewable energy.

Thanks to Taiwan Mobile, we’ve been able to examine issues that are very important to the continued well-being of our planet and share these insights with our community.

Other collaborators in Taiwan include QCT, with whom we dove into the value of having the right hardware to support new, innovative tech. Tagtoo also allowed us to share some best practices around digital advertising.

9. Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP) and InvestHK are two organizations we’ve worked with to promote Hong Kong as a startup destination.

With HKSTP, we shone the spotlight on the resources the city has for startups, as well as explored what makes Hong Kong an appealing destination for fintech and regtech companies.

As for InvestHK, aside from promoting its annual StartmeupHK Festival through newsletter ads and articles, we also zoomed in on the role of family offices in the startup scene and how Hong Kong is poised to support that.

We’ve also worked with Strategic Year to profile one of its portfolio companies, edtech startup Teky. Strategic Year was able to help Teky increase its brand awareness, and the article reflected how the private equity firm supports its portfolio companies on their journeys.

10. South Korea

South Korea is well-known for being the home of electronics giants (think the likes of Samsung and LG), but it’s also got a pretty vibrant tech and startup scene.

We worked with the Seoul Fintech Lab, unpacking the vast network of support and resources available to fintech startups in the country, as well as with accelerator DCamp, which is venturing into Southeast Asia and aiming to serve as a bridge between South Korea and the rest of the world.

On the companies front, we collaborated with Naver Cloud to spotlight startups in the SaaS and AI sectors, as part of the launch of its virtual private cloud services and availability zones in Singapore. In addition, we teamed up with Blintn to explore how virtual marketplaces can enable OTT platforms to see success.

11. Japan

The Japan External Trade Organization, a government-related entity that promotes mutual trade and investment between the country and the rest of the world, has collaborated with Tech in Asia Studios on several articles, which highlighted rising startups in Osaka as well as unpacked the challenges foreign companies may face entering Japan.

Automobile manufacturer Mitsubishi reached out to us to highlight its corporate venture capital fund and convey its investment thesis, as well as what it’s looking out for in the startups it hopes to back.

12. China

China’s another big player in the global tech scene. Alibaba, one of the biggest tech companies from the country, is among our clients.

We examined the importance of driving customer loyalty for Southeast Asia’s ecommerce companies, and we ran an article with Alibaba Cloud – the cloud computing arm – about its inaugural AsiaStar 10×10 campaign, which honors 100 companies, communities, and projects that have made meaningful changes in the region.

Another Chinese company we’ve worked with is Sensetime, which is working to develop AI solutions for the healthcare industry. Our piece discussed how the firm’s solutions can drive positive impact for doctors and patients alike.

To Asia and beyond

This long list is just the tip of the iceberg. Aside from clients in Asia, we’ve worked with brands and organizations from Australia, the UK, the US, Israel, and even Turkey and the Netherlands.

If you’re as excited as us about tech in Asia, let’s talk about what our best partnership looks like.
