Traveloka flies under the radar at the top of its game (#StartupAsia preview)

Traveloka

Traveloka co-founder and CEO Ferry Unardi

It’s fair to say that Traveloka is the quiet giant of Southeast Asia’s travel booking industry. Although the site currently has 120 employees, receives roughly 250,000 visitors per day, and boasts an Alexa rank of 129 in Indonesia, the prolific site for booking plane tickets doesn’t make many media appearances. In fact, it operates behind the curtain – much like the Wizard of Oz – with mystique and momentum.

In November 2012, Traveloka announced it received funding from East Ventures (disclosure: East Ventures also invests in Tech in Asia. See our ethics page). Last September, the company grabbed headlines again when it raised series A funding from Global Founders Capital, a VC firm co-founded by Rocket Internet’s Samwer brothers.

Traveloka co-founder and CEO Ferry Unardi is responsible for the company’s overall direction and strategy. Previously, he spent several years working on real-time media performance and reliability at Microsoft Lync. Unardi received his Bachelor’s degree in computer science and mathematics from Purdue University and attended the MBA program at Harvard Business School.

To date, local techies have long wondered what Traveloka’s recipe for success is. Unardi will speak at Startup Asia Jakarta 2014 to share insights about his company’s growth, investments, and plans for the future in Southeast Asia.
