Motorola has sold 3 million phones in India since launch nearly a year ago

Motorola revealed today that it has sold three million smartphones in India since the brand relaunched in the country in February 2014. That represents strong growth from Motorola’s one million milestone in India in July last year.
Motorola India head Amit Boni disclosed the number today, according to India Today. Motorola – which is now owned by Lenovo – sells its smartphones exclusively online in India in partnership with Flipkart.
It seems that Motorola has managed to maintain momentum in India despite the arrival of Xiaomi in the country in July 2014. Xiaomi matched Motorola’s early pace, revealing that it also sold one million phones in the first five months of business in the country.
India’s top two homegrown brands, Micromax and Karbonn, have responded to the entry of Motorola and Xiaomi by beefing up their budget phones with stronger specifications.
Boni added today that Motorola will open product experience areas across India to complement its online sales. “We will open one such zone in Bangalore soon. People will be able to try and experience Motorola phones at these zones. We plan to start with five to 10 such zones. The first one will be in Bangalore,” he said. These “zones”, whatever form they take (perhaps pop-up stores in malls?) will not sell devices.
