Here are the two biggest online music streaming sites in Indonesia

The music industry is one tough nut to crack for startups, but that might not be the case if you’re the biggest telco player in the country. Meet Langit Musik, an online music streaming site in Indonesia run by Telkomsel, and Melon Indonesia. The latter is a joint venture between parent company Telkom Indonesia and Korean telco SK Telecom. Both Langit Musik and Melon are arguably Indonesia’s biggest online music players to date.

Langit Musik is an online music site where users can stream and download legal music for a sum of money. Powered by Melon Indonesia, Langit Musik has about one million local and international songs in its database, complete with lyrics.

The two differences between Langit Musik and Melon are the target audience and product design. The former is banking on monetizing Telkomsel users, with non-Telkomsel customers having access only to the free plan. Melon, meanwhile, caters to everyone.

Langit Musik has three modes for users: basic, premium, and Flash. Basic allows users to freely stream music previews from Langit Musik. By subscribing to premium’s IDR 11,000 ($1) charge, users can stream and download unlimited songs for 30 days. Flash mode gives Telkomsel’s data users who pay IDR 50,000 ($4) every month access to unlimited streaming for 30 days. Telkomsel users can pay via carrier billing.

While Melon powers Langit Musik’s database, it also has its own streaming and download offerings consisting of three modes: unlimited streaming and music downloads for a period of time, a la carte downloads, and pure streaming for 30 days. Users can choose from loads of payment methods including carrier billing from Telkomsel, Flexi, Indosat, XL, as well as Smartfren, credit cards, Indomog vouchers, and KlikBCA.

The Langit Musik team say that they now have 400,000 monthly active users, but they could not disclose the number of active users that subscribe to the premium services. Melon Indonesia itself had 300,000 registered users last year. Both Langit Musik and Melon are now available on Android, BlackBerry, and iOS apps. The Windows Phone version for Langit Musik will come out in the coming months.

Both services also have video clips. The Langit Musik team plans to hold an indie concert in Yogyakarta at the end of this month and will hold more of them next year.

Besides Langit Musik and Melon, other players vying for a place in the music industry here include MeTunes, Ohdio ¹, Musii.co, and Deezer.
