Report: Xbox One could cost $800 in China at launch

With the China launch of the Xbox One creeping ever-closer, there’s still no official word on its price tag. Rumors a few months ago put the price at a whopping 4999 RMB (about $800), but more recent rumors suggested a lower price for the next-gen console.

Until now, that is. Sina Games is reporting that a promotional sales event on e-commerce site TMall offers consumers who answer a questionnaire and buy an Xbox One the chance to win a 5000 RMB ‘free order’ voucher. That certainly suggests that the cost of an Xbox One order could really be 4999 RMB.

(See: Chinese gamers overwhelmingly prefer PS4 to Xbox One)

The RMB 4999 price was also included in a list of possible prices released by e-commerce site Jingdong earlier this month, but it was the highest price listed, and at the time I wrote that it seemed unlikely the Xbox One would cost that much.

Until Microsoft and its local partner BesTV announce the official price, we can only guess at what the console will cost. Personally, I am still doubtful the 4999 RMB price tag is real; pricing the device so high would be virtual suicide, especially given that the Chinese market apparently prefers the PS4 anyway. If anything, it seems possible that Microsoft or its partners could be fueling these RMB 4999 rumors so that when the actual price it seems low in comparison, even though it will almost certainly still cost more in China than it does anywhere else.
