Indonesia’s Sayurbox fires staff amid stagnant B2C growth

Indonesia-based e-grocery firm Sayurbox has laid off several employees in its B2C team as growth in the segment plateaus, the company said in a statement, without revealing how many were affected by the cuts.

“Despite the company’s strong and growing performance in the B2B segment, the B2C market has not grown as expected during the pandemic,” it stated.

As a result, Sayurbox has merged some of its B2C warehouses, consolidated its instant delivery service into same-day delivery to improve operational efficiency, and restructured its teams.

However, Sayurbox confirmed that both its B2C and B2B businesses will continue to operate with next-day and same-day delivery services within the Greater Jakarta and Surabaya areas.

The company said it will help affected employees find new jobs and give them compensation packages, following applicable laws and regulations.

This is not the first time Sayurbox has carried out efficiency measures. It permanently closed two warehouse hubs earlier this year, as well as shut down its consumer-facing e-grocery services in Bali and laid off 5% of its workforce late last year.

Local agritech firm TaniHub also closed warehouses and trimmed some of its staff in 2022 as it moved away from the B2C segment.
