Twitter has close to 20 million active users in Indonesia

Now that both Facebook and Apple have offices in Indonesia, thereโ€™s only one more tech giant the countryโ€™s netizens are waiting for โ€“ Twitter. Peter Greenberger, director of political advertising for Twitter (NYSE:TWTR), is in Indonesia to meet with political leaders. The trip comes ahead of the vote for a new president next month.

Twitter revealed today that Indonesia has close to 20 million active Twitter users right now, reports Detik, but itโ€™s not clear if the company is referring to daily or monthly active users. That makes the social network an important channel for electioneering.

Most of these Indonesian Twitter users are new voters. Theyโ€™re a young and digital generation who are used to online media and arenโ€™t easily influenced by ads and money in politics. Thatโ€™s where social media comes in. In this election year, Indonesia has sent out 42.1 million tweets related to the election so far, a 36 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Globally, Twitter has 255 million monthly active users in its latest self-reported figures revealed in April.

Presidential candidate Joko Widodo โ€“ known as Jokowi โ€“ has met with Greenberger, and the presidential hopeful asked Twitter to make an investment in Indonesia. But thereโ€™s no word on a Twitter office for Indonesia.

Twitter plays a huge role in the political sphere, especially when it comes to national elections. Indiaโ€™s most retweeted tweet is the first one sent by newly elected Indian prime minister Narendra Modi moments after his election victory. Indonesiaโ€™s current president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, is the most-followed Asian political leader on Twitter with over five million followers.
