Eyeing the American pie, Zomato enters Canada with a $10 million kitty

zomato enters canada

Just weeks after announcing its fourth acquisition in three months, Indian restaurant search and discovery service Zomato took its first step into the North American market today. This time, instead of taking the buyout route, Zomato launched in Canada, listing over 11,000 restaurants in the Greater Toronto area on its website as well as mobile apps.

“We’ve earmarked US$10 million for our expansion in Canada, and are committed to making Zomato the go-to restaurant discovery service in the country. Canada is truly a great starting point for us before we think of getting into the United States,” Zomato co-founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal announced in a statement.

IIT Delhi grad Goyal founded Zomato with his college-mate Pankaj Chaddah in 2008. It is now one of the fastest growing startups from India, raising a total funding of over US$53 million. A US$37 million funding round came from Sequoia Capital and Info Edge last year.

Zomato announced its first acquisition, New Zealand’s food guide MenuMania, in July. In close succession, it gobbled up three more restaurant search services: Lunchtime.cz of the Czech Republic, Obedovat.sk of Slovakia, and Gastronauci of Poland. It’s now present in over 100 cities across 17 countries,

In the next few months, Zomato will expand operations into other cities across Canada, including Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, and Calgary.

Along with its entry into North America today, Zomato unveiled a new logo – a fork through the heart. Deepinder Goel says the new logo “signifies our connection with those who share our passion for food.”
