Charlie’s pick: Baidu Antivirus Launched, Qihoo 360 Facing Increased Competition in Web and Mobile Security
Baidu’s Anti-virus launch this week is the latest major salvo in what seems to be another budding trade war between Baidu, Qihoo, and probably Tencent. And given Zhou’s comments about Tencent this Thursday, things are likely to get ugly fast.
Paul’s pick: Top 10 Tips from 10×10 for Entrepreneurs
The usual faces from Beijing’s startup scene came out to 10×10 at Orange Labs, an open event targeted at Chinaccelerator‘s fresh round of startups. Keynotes came mostly from investors, who preached their experience and advice. I’ve condensed the entire afternoon’s sermons into 10 quick lessons.
Willis and Minghao’s pick: Squar, Myanmar’s First Social Network Wants to Beat Facebook
Willis: With Myanmar opening up, it looks like there’s space for any local internet service to compete against slower international giants. Squar looks to be only the first service catered to Myanmar. It could have its own local search, e-commerce marketplace, gaming giant, ad network, and even chat application in the near future. Exciting.
Minghao: Gaps and problems are the main reason for entrepreneurship. With Myanmar’s economy opening up, there are 101 problems to be solved. For hungry entrepreneurs and investors, Myanmar is certainly an exciting country to look into. I look forward to witnessing the growth of many startups into the future hundred million valuation companies as the country goes through rapid modernization. Squar being in the space early, may be one of these success stories.
Phoebe’s pick: Kickstart Ventures and Pollenizer Seek the Next Gutsy Startup in the Philippines
The startups that incubator firm Kickstart Ventures have supported are already showing up strong in the market. We have recently featured one of its funded startups, Apptivate, who now looks into expanding outside of the country. With Australian venture builder Pollenizer on their side, they might just better shape the future startups to reach the global market.
Youshen’s pick: Cllike Wants to Make Your Facebook Likes Mean Something
Cllike is certainly exciting change for me. Facebook Likes has been a form of engagement and content curation activity for Facebook users. However, Cllike presents a new conversion process to turn Facebook Likes into a call-to-action that results in an real outcome. Of course, Cllike is focused on turning Facebook Likes for users to help a social cause call for donations while engaging with business brands. I would very much like to imagine scaling the immense applications for online marketing and petitions.
Steven’s pick: Digital Music Sales in China Hit $75 Million
In a country with dozens of Gucci stores, streets lined with Mercedes and Porsches and pricey apartments (well, that’s the experience for some), you’d think that China’s half billion netizens would be spending hundreds of millions of dollars on digital music as a soundtrack to their lives. But no. Nonetheless, despite that tiny $75 million figure, check out what some Chinese music sites are doing to legalize and monetize their content.
