The row with prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) doesn’t seem to have dimmed Flipkart’s appeal for job-seekers in India. Despite its recent troubles, the homegrown ecommerce leader comes out on top in a list of India’s 25 most attractive employers compiled by LinkedIn. Its global rival Amazon comes in second, while main local rival Snapdeal is eleventh in the list.
Multi-national companies like Google, Deloitte, KPMG, and Adobe and IT services firms like Capgemini and HCL Tech figure in the top 8, followed by three startups backed by SoftBank in India: Housing, Ola, and Snapdeal. Housing, like Flipkart, has had a rough ride since last year, with its founder-CEO Rahul Yadav getting sacked. But it appears to still be doing well in attracting talent.
LinkedIn says its first ever Top Attractors list ranking the most sought-after companies for professionals is based on actions of its 433 million members. It also carried out an online survey of workers in partnership with Censuswide Research. It had metrics like the number of views and applications per job posting and employee retention as tracked by profile updates.
Globally, Apple, Salesforce, and Facebook are the top three attractors of talent, according to LinkedIn, which took itself out of contention. The list does figure Microsoft, however, which acquired LinkedIn last week. Its inclusion will be reevaluated in the next compilation.
LinkedIn says companies on the list expressed a desire for candidates who are passionate about their brand and mission. Salesforce, for example, told LinkedIn that the best candidates “enthusiastically express what makes [them] tick… and align [that] with the company’s mission.”
LinkedIn also offered its take on why these companies made it into the list of Top Attractors. Flipkart, for example, is described as a risk-taker for experimenting with the app-only mode for Myntra. Here’s what LinkedIn had to say about the 6 startups on the India list.
Flipkart

India’s original startup poster boy is a place where risk-taking is encouraged, according to LinkedIn. As evidence, it offers the move to go app-only with fashion portal Myntra and rolling it back when it did not give the desired results. Flipkart Lite to reach mobile users in poorly connected areas is a new move that has attracted attention.
In personal benefits, the company’s six-month maternity leave and sabbatical options score high. Although growth has stalled and Amazon is catching up fast, it remains a favorite of job-seekers.
