Giant Interactive‘s Long Journey MMORPG series (征途, also called ZT Online), has long been a popular game amongst Asian fans of MMOs (although the game was banned in Vietnam last year). But it never featured particularly up-to-date looking graphics.
That will all change in 2015, when the company launches a 3D version of the game called ZT Online 3D, according to Giant Interactive CEO Ji Xuefeng. Ji announced the game in an interview with Chinese gaming site 17173. (Note that “3D” here refers to the in-game models and environment, which will be three-dimensional, not the actual image displayed on the screen. ZT Online 3D won’t require 3D glasses, it’s just a game that’s being modeled in 3D instead of drawn in 2D).
Details about the game are thin — no surprise for a game still so far away from a release date — but Ji told 17173 that the game’s engine has been in development since 2006 and that currently there are about 150 people on the team dedicated to ZT Online 3D. All future titles in the ZT Online series will be 3D titles, but fans of 2D sprites will still be able to play Giant’s Jianghu series, which will remain 2D.
