In brief: Tencent-backed Chinese Q&A platform Zhihu banks $434m from Baidu, Kuaishou

  • Zhihu, a Chinese question and answer platform, raised US$434 million from investors including livestreaming platform Kuaishou and search giant Baidu to help fund its expansion, Bloomberg reported, citing a statement from China Renaissance Holdings, which advised on the deal.
  • Existing investors Tencent Holdings and Capital Today also participated in the round.
  • The investments could help Kuaishou and Baidu amass more content and compete with Bytedance, which is moving into search and currently offers short video and personalized news services.
  • With the deal, Baidu will add Zhihu’s online Q&A content to its main mobile app.
