Into the woods of CRM: A choose-your-own-adventure story
Let’s set the scene.
You run SleekFlow, a rising social commerce startup that helps companies manage communications across different messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, WeChat, and Facebook Messenger.
The company is on an upward trajectory, rolling out marketing campaigns, identifying and connecting with leads, and onboarding new customers.
Things are going pretty fast, and they’re going well. But like the startup version of Little Red Riding Hood, it’s time to venture out into the unknown. In this case, that’s into the world of customer relationship management (CRM) solutions.
There are a daunting number of options available – numerous tools, features, and pricing plans. But you have to get through these woods to come out on the other side and build great customer relationships to set yourself up for success.
Play this simple game to see how you would work out the scenario. How this rising startup fares in this virtual context is in your hands.
Meeting the needs of a growing startup
How did you fare? The decisions you just made were a highly simplified version of what the actual process of identifying the right CRM solution for a business entails and the potential areas where one can stumble.
In actuality, the real SleekFlow did indeed end up going with HubSpot as its CRM provider. According to Henson Tsai, SleekFlow’s founder and CEO, the startup needed something that would enable it to “maximize efficiency and optimize performance” across sales, marketing, and support operations, while being cost-effective.

On this search, SleekFlow learned about the HubSpot for Startups (HSFS) program.
HSFS supports the growth of scaling startups by offering valuable resources, blogs, and video content for founders. Startups under the program can also access HubSpot’s CRM platform at a discounted rate (30% to 90% off) depending on their stage of growth and how much funding the company has raised. SleekFlow was eligible for the maximum amount of support available – a discount of 90% on its first year using HubSpot, 50% in its second, and a 25% discount for subsequent years.
“This allowed us to take advantage of HubSpot’s capabilities without committing significant resources upfront,” Tsai shares. “As a startup, this was particularly important for us, as we needed a pilot run before committing to a long-term solution.”
A single source of truth
Having used HubSpot since late 2021, SleekFlow has benefited from the wide ecosystem of resources available through the platform, which covers segments like sales, marketing, and customer management.
More crucially, HubSpot has eased the challenges SleekFlow faced with monitoring operations across its seven different markets.
“Regional managers are able to leverage HubSpot’s dashboard feature to view the entire funnel from marketing to sales across all regions in one place, saving approximately half a day per week,” says Tsai.
By implementing an effective CRM platform across all its departments, SleekFlow has been able to create a single source of truth that allows teams to see the entire customer journey, right from when they’re effectively targeted as a lead, all the way to when they’re on board with SleekFlow as a customer.
The startup has seen a tangible impact on its operations. For one, thanks to the ability to do advanced segmentation and workflows, SleekFlow has maintained clean contact lists and carried out more targeted campaigns, improving email marketing open rates from an average of 10% to 30% between the period of June 2022 to May 2023.
It has also been able to better manage potential leads that come in through marketing campaigns, pulling these leads into a centralized platform for the relevant sales teams to follow up with and to monitor what sales strategies help drive more conversions.
Plus, SleekFlow has seen increased customer satisfaction and retention rates through the use of a proper customer relationship management platform. It can now identify customers most at risk of churning and intervene appropriately to mitigate that outcome. It has successfully served over 5,000 clients across 120 regions so far.
“We’ve been able to enhance customer satisfaction, improve our support operations, and identify opportunities for further business growth,” adds Tsai.
HubSpot for Startups is on a mission to help millions of startups grow better.
