Xinhua is a little late to the party, but finally the official news agency of China has its very own microblog. Xinhua Weibo is online at t.home.news.cn, adding to a very crowded Chinese microblog space.
The move does make sense for Xinhua because, as we reported last month, research suggests that microblogs are an increasingly popular place among local netizens in search of news. Having said that, we are hardly anticipating any mass migration of users abandoning other platforms in favor of Xinhua’s.
The news agency’s new microblog comes just a few weeks after Sina spun off its own Weibo in anticipation of a likely IPO. Sina currently holds about 56% of the microblog market share after showing incredible growth in the short time since it has launched.
