Traveloka to close e-grocery service after 6 months

Traveloka, an Indonesia-based online travel firm, will soon close Traveloka Mart, its e-grocery service, after operating only for six months.

“We will close the Traveloka Mart service as part of the company’s business strategy and priorities,” wrote Traveloka in a statement received by Tech in Asia Indonesia.

Traveloka Mart was part of the company’s diversification efforts when Covid-19 significantly impacted the travel industry, as various ecommerce firms also made their e-grocery moves. The service provides a variety of products ranging from frozen foods, fruits, and vegetables to stationery and personal care products.

The travel unicorn said it will follow applicable rules to make sure the Traveloka Mart closing process does not violate the rights of employees and partners. The offering has attracted self-service retailers such as Lotte Mart, Prima, and MOR, as well as various grocery store partners in the Greater Jakarta area.

“We will continue to coordinate with partners and provide support in the process of closing the Traveloka Mart service,” the company said.

In July, Traveloka was set to receive an investment with an undisclosed amount from PTT Oil and Retail Business, a subsidiary of the Thai energy giant PTT. This came as Traveloka was raising US$200 million after an unsuccessful blank-check merger last year.

Before Traveloka, local online supermarket Brambang.com also ended its grocery service and pivoted to electronics.
