The digital currency institute of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) is ramping up its hiring for its digital yuan trials, with a technical director among its targets, reported the South China Morning Post.
With a monthly salary of up to 100,000 yuan (US$15,260), the technical director will lead “big-picture planning” and research and development for the new currency, also called e-CNY. The PBOC previously made job postings for engineers and developers for the trials.
The digital yuan is currently being tested in nine cities, including Shanghai and Beijing. The PBOC plans to expand the trial to Chongqing, Tianjin, Hangzhou, and Guangzhou.
The currency was used at the Winter Olympics as one of the accepted payment methods in the event, together with cash and Visa. Tencent’s WeChat is also testing a digital yuan-focused app that will enable e-CNY transactions on its platform.
