Tencent’s WeChat is conducting A/B testing for a mini program that allows for payments in digital yuan or e-CNY, reported Pandaily, citing Chinese media.
Named “Tencent e-CNY Wallet,” the mini program will allow users to transact using the digital currency through QR codes on WeChat. They will also get to transfer funds, collect payments, and access credit card functions through the program.
For the mini program to work, users need to activate the wallet function of WeBank, Tencent’s digital banking arm, in the e-CNY app.
The world first experienced China’s digital currency at the Winter Olympics earlier this year, where it was one of the few accepted payment methods alongside Visa cards and cash.
China’s cryptocurrency crackdown last year was seen as a move to remove threats to its e-CNY plans. The country’s central bank previously rolled out the digital currency in both Shanghai and Beijing as part of its testing.
