Blockchain Game Alliance appoints The Sandbox exec as board member

The Blockchain Game Alliance (BGA), an industry organization focused on the adoption of blockchain tech in gaming, has appointed The Sandbox executive Serena Tabacchi as its newest board member to boost the inclusion of women in the space.

Other members of the BGA board include Sebastien Borget of Animoca Brands and The Sandbox, Gabby Dizon of Yield Guild Games, Aleksander Larsen of Sky Mavis, Nicolas Pouard of Ubisoft, and Piers Kicks of Bitkraft. Tabacchi replaces Caty Tedman of Dapper Labs, who voluntarily stepped down from the BGA board in 2021.

Tabacchi brings extensive experience in blockchain and NFTs to the BGA. She is also the director and co-founder of the Museum of Contemporary Digital Art, a virtual museum based in the Decentraland metaverse, and she is part of the SuperRare Labs board as well.

In a survey for BGA members, only one in five respondents were women. The survey found that these women respondents were generally younger than their men counterparts and were more likely to have held their current position for less than five years. There were also less women in founding positions, with 16% of women respondents identifying as founders compared to 37% of men.

However, Tabacchi sees this as a positive sign for fresh women talent entering the blockchain gaming space.

“This is the beginning, it is happening, and we can expect the BGA to create opportunities and initiatives to include more and more women in future,” she said.

Founded in 2018, the BGA represents over 473 members across 74 countries, with its membership seeing a 186% growth from 2020 to 2021. It provides an open forum for individuals and companies to share knowledge, collaborate, create common standards, establish best practices, and network. Some of the BGA’s activities include a demo day, project presentations, and focused webinars.
