Starting a formal campaign, China’s internet watchdog said it will conduct on-site inspections of internet firms and review their services in a move to crackdown on the potential abuse of algorithms, Bloomberg reported.
Without naming any firms, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said that “large-scale websites, platforms, and products with big influence” would be targeted. Tencent, Alibaba, JD.com, Mietuan, and ByteDance are some of China’s top internet giants.
The CAC said it had interviewed representatives from companies like Tencent, Alibaba, Meituan, and JD.com regarding a total of over 200,000 layoffs at those firms between July and mid-March in 2021.
