While Xiaomi’s budget Redmi 2 is hotly anticipated in India, its launch in Singapore today was somewhat muted in comparison, with very little fanfare.
Xiaomi’s Redmi 2 retails at S$169 (US$122) in Singapore. Put side-by-side with its predecessor, the Redmi 1S, it will seem like nothing much has changed on the surface. Despite being slightly lighter and thinner, it sports the same 4.7-inch IPS HD display and 720×1,280 pixel screen resolution as the 1S.

The Redmi 2 is more colorful than the 1S, with a choice of white or three pastel colors, but Singaporean shoppers can only snag the white one at the moment.
Inside is where the magic lies. The Redmi 2 boasts a 64-bit, quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz, which Xiaomi claims gives it 50 percent more processing power than its predecessor. It also has two SIM card slots, both with 4G support, and a 2,200mAh lithium-ion polymer battery, which apparently has 10 percent more capacity compared to the Redmi 1S.
Curiously, Xiaomi has decided not to roll out its latest Mi4 flagship or the larger Mi Note smartphone this time round in Singapore, instead going with its entire range of budget offerings in the island-state.
