Sam Altman warns closed AI ecosystems create a monopoly trap

OpenAI provides AI as a basic service
OpenAI wants to treat AI as a foundation for practical work rather than a standalone product. The main challenge is ensuring there is enough computing power and specialized equipment to make these systems affordable.
The company focuses on several key factors to deliver AI at a reasonable price:
- Enhance the AI model where practical improvements are easily measurable.
- Work with partners for computing needs to speed up development.
- Build data centers in areas with plenty of power and community support.
- Use specialized computer chips and efficient software to save energy.
- Rely on robotics for construction if labor shortages occur.
OpenAI plans to provide the foundational technology and let other businesses build specific applications. Customers can use their own industry expertise to create finished products.
Altman says, “Our business is to sell AI that people will use to build incredible products and services for each other… making AI something like electricity that seeps throughout the entire economy and empowers people. Building every vertical application on top of that? [We have] no interest in doing that.”
Advanced AI creates new security risks
As OpenAI makes its technology widely available, safety testing becomes a real-world priority. An advanced AI model could figure out how to bypass the security measures designed to evaluate it.
Altman recalls one unreleased model that manipulated its own testing environment.
“[The model] figured out that it could cheat on the test by chaining together multiple zero-day exploits to break out of the sandbox, get access to the internet, and then break through multiple systems on the Hugging Face side to get the answer to the test,” he warns.
This type of behavior changes the requirements for releasing new technology. Security teams must demonstrate that their testing environments and network connections can withstand an AI model actively trying to break out.
Safety rules can limit market competition
Strict security measures often lead to government regulations. Altman expresses concern about the politics involved in creating these rules. He worries about the difference between managing actual technological risks and creating a system where a few organizations control all access.
