Case settled: Cyanogen will provide child support to OnePlus One in India

Here’s some good news for users of OnePlus One in India. They can now receive updates of the Cyanogen operating system, which had been suspended following a legal dispute between OnePlus and Cyanogen. OnePlus announced today that the case has been withdrawn.

The Chinese phone-maker got into a legal tangle soon after launching the OnePlus One in India. Just two months earlier, homegrown phone-maker Micromax had acquired the rights to be Cyanogen’s exclusive partner in India for its new phone YU. So OnePlus One phones in India running on CyanogenOS could not get updates. This put a dampener on the reception to the OnePlus One in India, even as rival Xiaomi made waves.

“OnePlus remains vindicated of the recent trials and tribulations that have surrounded the company due to the legal tussle with Micromax over exclusivity on CyanogenOS. We are happy to confirm that all OnePlus One users in India will continue to receive OTA updates from Cyanogen in-line with our users in markets around of the world,” Vikas Agarwal, India head of OnePlus, announced.

Following its dispute with Cyanogen, OnePlus developed its own Android skin called Oxygen, which got released last month. But many users of OnePlus One who had got used to Cyanogen were reluctant to switch over to a new OS.. Now they will have a choice.

Going forward, however, OnePlus Two is expected to launch in June with the Oxygen OS. Last week, Cyanogen’s Steve Kondik said in Beijing that the partnership with OnePlus was over, and it would work with other Chinese vendors instead.. So that makes today’s announcement of continued Cyanogen support for OnePlus One sweeter.

OnePlus, on its part, seems happy to have been forced to develop its own Android build. As its co-founder Carl Pei wrote in a blog post:

By doing so, we can offer better localization and faster updates. We can directly implement user feedback and make it easy for the OnePlus community to shape our ROM and create the OS that they want to use. Integration between hardware, software, and the cloud will become more seamless and unified for everyone using a OnePlus device. By creating our own software, we’re better able to work directly with our users to improve our OS.
