North Korea’s only mobile operator earns just $30 million in profit per quarter

The telecom industry is massive – and massively profitable – all across Asia. But as is often the case when it comes to technology, North Korea is apparently bucking the trend. According to Techweb (via Chosun Ilbo), Koryolink – North Korea’s only mobile telecom operator – earns about US$30 million in profit per quarter.

That might sound like a lot, but it’s peanuts compared to Asia’s other telecom operators. For example, China Mobile – one of China’s three major mobile telecoms – rakes in more than US$30 million in profit every day on average.

Koryolink had about 2.4 million total subscribers in North Korea as of this September, according to North Korea Tech.
