Netflix hired a former YouTube executive Gaurav Pradhan to steer growth in Asian markets. Marketing mag Campaign Asia writes:
Based in Singapore, Pradhan will oversee business development in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. Pradhan previously led YouTube’s product partnerships for India and Southeast Asia. He has also worked with Yahoo in India.
So Netflix isn’t giving up on Indonesia just yet, despite its rocky start when it got blocked by Indonesia’s state-owned ISP.
The appointment of an ex-YouTuber familiar with Southeast Asia could be significant. The video platform has proven more sensible in the way it treated its operations in Indonesia than competitor Vimeo.
In 2014, Vimeo was blocked by Indonesian authorities for allegedly failing to censor videos containing nudity for the Indonesian market. YouTube, on the other hand, was praised for complying with Indonesia’s censorship demands and thus remained accessible.
