Mobile Roadie Hits 10 Million App Downloads, Launches in China

mobile-roadies

Mobile Roadie is a self-service mobile app platform that powers iOS and Android apps for celebrities, companies, and artists. Clients include Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, the World Economic Forum and Universal.

It is not only well-known in the west but also in some parts of Asia, particularly in China and Japan. The two-year old mobile app platform has recently announced hitting its 10 million app download milestone. Plus, it has also officially launched a dedicated site in China, together with the Queen of Pop — Madonna. That’s perhaps not a very wise choice, though. Getting Jay Chou or Zhang Shao-han on board would certainly generate greater attention across China.

From its blog post announcement:

With the help of our local partner FabriQate, a full-service mobile agency with offices in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Mumbai and London, we are introducing Q魔宝 (English Translation: QMoBao), a localized version of the Mobile Roadie platform, to the Chinese market.

We have also strategically partnered with China Unicom and China Mobile, two of China’s leading telecommunication providers, to assist in our launch.

Mobile Roadie’s existence in China will prove useful as it creates a bridge between western celebrities and fans in China through iOS and Android apps. We have witnessed how enthusiastic/crazy Chinese fans can be as they flock in swarms to follow/stalk celebrities like Tom Cruise and Emma Watson on Sina Weibo.

Mobile Raodies will have a good chance of success as long as Asia celebrities embrace its services as has happened in the West. I don’t see much of a problem, though, given that the telcos are behind Mobile Raodie’s back. But again, Groupon and Tencent’s floundering partnership reminds us that getting a local partner doesn’t necessary equate to success in China. We’ll see.
