When Tom Cruise joined Sina Weibo, we predicted that many other Hollywood celebrities would follow suit. Now Emma Watson, the Harry Potter female star lead, has jumped on the bandwagon of Weibo superstars. Her first Weibo (tweet) greeted fans, assuring them that the account is authentic. Here is a screen capture:
Apparently Chinese are already welcoming her with open arms. Harry Potter films, like everywhere else on the planet, are very popular in China (definitely more popular than the recent propaganda movie, The Beginning of the Great Revival). At the point of writing, Emma Watson in the top trending topic spot over on Sina Weibo.
As Watson joins the Chinese microblog, I wonder if other Harry Potter stars like Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint follow suit. It’s an interesting shift, and we can probably expect more celebrities to join the wave when the English interface of Sina Weibo launches, probably at the end of this year.
Deathly Hallows Part 2 will come out in China soon, after being delayed by the afore-mentioned Communist party epic.
