Hello reader,
“Move fast and break things” was Mark Zuckerberg’s motto for Facebook for many years. It idealized what it meant to work at a startup.
When I entered university in Vietnam a decade ago, I aspired to work at a tech company. Back then, the media often described startups as “burning cash” in pursuit of their missions. I used to believe founders never ran out of money to build their world-changing products.
Fast forward to today, in a post-Covid world that’s forced tech founders back to reality, few still buy into the idea of growth at all costs.
Being in the black is now something founders actively strive for – and brag about. Profitability has become a non-negotiable for startups.
That’s why today, we’re highlighting profitable startups and tech companies across Southeast Asia. I hope this list sparks ideas for building sustainable business models by learning from peers across the region.
For those growing too fast, layoffs often follow – a trend we’re seeing across Asia for the past two years. In today’s Spotlight, I break down how we track the data for job cuts.
