Lei Jun confirms Xiaomi press conference on Sept. 5; Mi-3 and Smart TV likely to make debuts
Late last night, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun posted the image at right to his Sina Weibo account. It announces a major press conference at China’s National Conference Center on September 5, and while it doesn’t specify which products are going to be announced, the third-generation Xiaomi smartphone is almost certainly one of them (a new Xiaomi phone has been announced around this time in each of the last two years) and the Chinese tech press is speculating that the other is going to be the long-rumored Xiaomi TV.
It’s also interesting to note that the venue, the National Conference Center, is a change from years past, when this event was held in Beijing’s 798 arts district. The switch is presumably to help the company accommodate more guests; the NCC is significantly bigger than Xiaomi’s previous venue.
There are also a number of other rumored Xiaomi products that could theoretically be unveiled at the event, including a Xiaomi tablet and even a pair of “smart” shoes, but none of them seem likely to be ready for primetime right now, according to TechWeb. With that said, there’s still a solid half-month between now and the press event, and it’s possible Xiaomi has all kinds of secrets under wraps, so we may have to wait until the day itself to really be sure what the company is keeping up its sleeves.
