Last year, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun told us in no uncertain terms that the company would not be making a tablet. But a year later, has the man behind China’s hippest cheap smartphones changed his tune? The rumor buzz about a Xiaomi tablet coming this summer is getting awfully loud, and surprisingly specific.
The latest news comes via reports in the Taiwanese press, which cite Foxconn sources as suggesting that the device, a 7-inch tablet, will be priced at 999 RMB ($163) and is coming on August 16, probably at the same time the Xiaomi Mi-3 phone is formally announced. And some rumored tech specs have leaked, too:
- 1080p HD video/13 MP stills camera
- Mediatek MT8125 4-core processor
- Support for Wifi, 3G HSPA+, and 2G EDGE networks
- Support for Bluetooth 4.0
- GPS location tracking
- FM radio reciever
But of course, that could all just be made up. Xiaomi has been linked with a lot of rumored new products, some of which never materialized，and the company continues to deny that it plans to release a tablet. Still, if the leaks continue, could Xiaomi’s Mi-3 reveal press event be slated to feature its own “one more thing…” moment? We’ll have to wait and see.
