The Irish Tourism team launched a Twitter campaign called “My Irish 140” which aims to encourage those living in the UK with Irish heritage to tweet their connection with Ireland. It has a simple concept.
All users need to do is to tweet about their Irish connection and tagged it with #makesmeirish. For example: Warm friendly people, fresh, clean air and breath-taking scenery, the buzz of Dublin alive with music, proper Guiness, etc. #makesmeirish
Plus, users who share their thoughts also stand a chance to win a prize.
“We’re giving two lucky people (you have to be a GB resident) an amazing, exhilarating 140-hour adventure in Ireland. It will serve up thrills, excitement, laughs and rewards aplenty. We’ve got the whole thing mapped out, but we want to give our lucky winners a surprise as to where they’ll be going. Maybe it’ll be you,” explained on the website. The video will explain it in details.
Tourism Ireland chief executive Niall Gibbons said they had been working to maximise the use of social media platforms, most notably Twitter and Facebook, to promote the island of Ireland, the Irish Times reported.
“Twitter is a great way for us to promote Ireland and engage directly with potential British holidaymakers in 140 characters,” said Tourism Ireland chief executive Niall Gibbons.
“We can keep in touch with people around GB, track what they are thinking, inform them about news and events in Ireland in a fun way, inspiring them to come and explore the island of Ireland.”
It’s unclear if the campaign will be a success. But we are certainly seeing more countries adopting social media as a channel to attract visitors.
