In a bid to connect the Indian-American community, the U.S Indian Embassy has recently launched a Facebook Page. The initiative was introduced by Meera Shankar, Head of Indian Ambassador to United States. Apart from connecting with Indians, the page is also aimed to provide services to Americans visiting India.
The Facebook page has so far received positive responses from people.
On the Facebook page, one of the users, Sudhindra Arsikere said, “Nice to have a virtual platform like this so that we Indians can keep in touch with our embassy.”
Another user, Sakthi Ganesh said, “India joining his hands with social media advantage. Cheers!”
The Facebook page has been updated at regular frequencies talking about their keynote address by Ambassador Meera Shankar and a festival called “Maximum India”.
Embassy spokesman Virander Paul said that “We are happy to announce the launch of the Facebook account of the Embassy. Please join the group and also invite other ‘friends of India’ to join”
The government of India has been actively using Facebook as a platform to connect, converse and promote. Facebook was also used to promote India’s Census 2011 where the community learns and discusses national matters with officials. The Planning Commission of India also introduced a Facebook Page to educate and communicate India’s expenditure planning for the next 5 Years. The launch of these Facebook pages isn’t coincidental. Someone within the Indian government must have noticed the effectiveness of Facebook as a channel to connect with locals.
