Singapore’s national broadcaster Mediacorp will be producing a Chinese-language drama called DreamCoder, which will be about startups. It will debut on February 7, 2017, and air on Channel 8.
According to a Facebook post by government agency IDA, the show will focus on Singapore’s “vibrant tech ecosystem,” and how people “can pursue an education or career in technology.”
Expect a love triangle or two. The show will star Joanne Peh, Romeo Tan, Carrie Wong, Aloysius Pang, and Desmond Tan. Romeo will play a “talented project director” who’s “strong in UI design.”
Meanwhile, Aloysius will play a programmer who’s apparently anti-social and introverted.
Aloysius will portray a programmer. Talk about cliches.
By the way, this isn’t Singapore’s first attempt producing a drama show about startups. Channel U crashed and burned with Start-Up, which was so badly researched I rolled my eyes five times in one episode.
To be fair, MediaCorp is capable of producing a good show once in a while, even if they tend to be preachy, predictable, and nationalistic. But should it succeed within the demographic it caters to, then that’s probably a good thing.
If it’ll even have 50 percent of the ingenuity of Silicon Valley, there’s hope.
