Multiply to Strengthen its Support for Indonesian Female Entrepreneurs

multiply

Multiply, Indonesia’s leading online shopping platform, together with one of Indonesia’s biggest female magazines, Femina, has partnered up to bring the select finalists of Femina Female Entrepreneurship Program products online. This is one of the many moves Multiply has taken to support both the local industry and to strengthen its hold on the broadly female sellers [1] on its site since relocating their headquarters to Indonesia.

Femina Female Entrepreneurship Program is an annual competition that offers prizes of cash, exposure from Femina magazine, workshops, coaching sessions, and network expansion to its participants. The participants are female entrepreneurs whose age range from 25–40 years old and own a small enterprise.

The competition, which has been held since 2008, has successfully produced numerous nationwide businesses and medium-sized enterprises such as Coffee Toffee and Pourvous. This year, the 25 select finalists would receive assistance in strengthening their businesses online with Multiply’s full-featured social commerce platform. In addition to that, Multiply also bestowed two special awards to two finalists, Ligwina Hananto of QM Financial and Maretta Astri Nirmanda of Lazuli Sarae.

I think this is a good move for Multiply as there is lots of potential growth for future women entrepreneurs in Indonesia. While in 2011 Indonesian female entrepreneurs still consisted of only 0.1 percent of the total population, the female population itself is very big in Indonesia, at 49 percent [2], and Multiply already has a strong hold on the current crop of Indonesian female entrepreneurs.

There are healthy signs of intent to stimulate the growth of female entrepreneurship in Indonesia [3]. And when the numbers do increase in the next three to five years, Multiply would then be ready to provide a home for these new entrepreneurs.

  1. In December 2011, Multiply reported that most of their 50,000 sellers at the time are female. The newest number now is 85,000 sellers, but we can safely assume that female sellers are still quite dominant.  ↩

  2. The data was given by Indonesia’s Ministry of Women Empowerment, Mrs. Linda Amalia Gumelar in early 2011.  ↩

  3. The support for female entrepreneurship is increasing in Indonesia as there are numerous collaborations conducted by the Ministry of Micro Small Medium Enterprises and Women Empowerment, and also the growing number of social foundations focusing to help female entrepreneurs such as Sahabat Wanita and HP31 Forum.  ↩
