Ex-Hooq chief joins JobStreet parent firm as CEO

Seek Asia, the operator of online job portals JobsDB and JobStreet in the region, has named former Hooq CEO Peter Bithos as its new CEO.

In his new role, Bithos will be in charge of leading the company’s operations and driving business growth. He will be taking over from Suresh Thiru, who has served in the role since 2016 and has been with Seek Asia since 2000.

“Peter has a proven track record growing tech, media, and telco businesses, leading digital business transformation programs, and building strong company cultures in diverse markets across Asia Pacific and the US,” said Seek Group chief operating officer and Asia Pacific and Americas CEO Ian Narev. “I am very excited about what he will bring to our business, while taking Seek Asia to the next level of  growth.”

Prior to his appointment, Bithos served as the head chief of now defunct Hooq. The video-streaming platform was a joint venture between Singtel, Sony Pictures, and Warner Bros. launched in 2015, a time when Netflix was only starting to expand across Asia.

Hooq struggled to gain ground in the region, as its US-based rival began entering more Southeast Asian markets. It then filed for liquidation earlier this year after reportedly failing to hit its growth targets and provide sustainable returns.

In addition to Hooq, Bithos also previously served as the chief operating officer at Globe Telecom in the Philippines and as the CEO of Virgin Mobile Australia.

“I feel fortunate to be joining at this very moment because Seek Asia’s purpose to improve lives through better careers has never been more urgent amidst the current social and economic environment brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.
