According to a listing on the company’s website, the Singapore exec will be spearheading Coinbase’s expansion strategy in the region. This includes evaluating and recommending growth options in Asia – excluding Japan – based on individual market analysis.
“As Coinbase continues to expand internationally, we are looking for an exceptional candidate to help build out and run our Asia-ex Japan business, which will be headquartered in Singapore,” the listing read.
The Singapore exec will report to Coinbase’s vice president of business and data Dan Yoo who is based in San Francisco.
In addition to a country manager, Coinbase has also listed openings for a client services manager and a Singapore-based, Asia Pacific-focused senior recruiter. The latter will be responsible for building a pipeline of candidates for junior- to senior-level positions in the Asia Pacific, as well as in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa “should the need arise.”
Since its establishment in 2012, Coinbase has grown to become one of the world’s major bitcoin exchanges and cryptocurrency wallet services. It expanded into Southeast Asia in 2015 after first offering its services in the city-state.
Two years ago, the company raised US$300 million from backers Polychain Capital and Y Combinator’s Continuity fund. Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC was also reported to be among the investors in the 2018 fundraise, which valued Coinbase at over US$8 billion post-money.
In addition to Singapore, Coinbase’s services are also available in several Asian countries such as Indonesia, Korea, and the Philippines.
One of its major competitors in the region is Binance, which recently applied for an operating license in Singapore under the city-state’s new Payment Services Act.
“We submitted the application pretty fast. Binance’s Singapore entity has been in close touch with the local regulators, and they have always been open-minded,” said CEO Changpeng Zhao back in February.
