Netflix could open an office in Vietnam within this year after negotiations with relevant authorities, Reuters reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The streaming giant could be the first major US tech firm to have a direct presence in Vietnam despite its strict internet rules.
According to Reuters, Netflix has already conducted a risk assessment and gauged potential security and political issues.
A new decree that took effect in January mandates that video-on-demand service providers must be licensed by the Vietnamese government, requiring them to have a local office.
Netflix has just dropped subscription prices in 100 markets, including Vietnam and a few other Southeast Asian countries, in a bid to boost subscription growth.
