[Update on 20 March, 6:33 pm] The speakers for Decode Jakarta 2017 have been updated.
Mobile apps have taken the consumer world by storm. They have become the go-to channel for communication, entertainment, shopping, and more. Key insights from App Annie’s latest report show that the total time spent in apps worldwide increased by over 150 billion hours from 2015 to 2016 to reach nearly 900 billion hours. In that same time frame, mobile app revenue grew a whopping 40 percent from US$24 billion to $35 billion.
Indonesia: A market untapped and ready for explosive growth
Most of the mobile growth in 2016 came from emerging markets, which accounted for four of the top five countries by total time spent in 2016. Indonesia was ranked fourth globally for both total time spent and downloads. But experts say as a hyper-growth market, Indonesia is only just getting started.
Indonesia remains relatively untapped as its smartphone penetration rate is still expanding rapidly, supported by recent government efforts to upgrade all wireless networks to 4G. This, in turn, has catalysed tremendous growth in Indonesia’s mobile app economy, with the country clocking over 50 billion hours in total time spent in apps on Android phone in 2016 alone.
