Rocket Internet fattens up Foodpanda in India with acquisition of TastyKhana

Rocket Internet announced today that itโs acquiring Indian food delivery startup TastyKhana. The deal will boost Rocketโs own similar service, Foodpanda, which operates in 14 Asian nations, including India.
The deal (no financials have been revealed) will see Foodpanda and TastyKhana continuing to run in India as separate brands. Collectively the two sites offer users food deliveries from over 10,000 restaurants in India, covering over 173 cities.
Rival sites in India include JustEat and BigBite.
TastyKhana was started in 2007 and was later effectively acquired by Germanyโs Delivery Hero. The buy-out sees the Indian site transferred from Delivery Hero to its new German parents.
Earlier today, Rocket Internet revealed its first earnings report since its October IPO. It shows that Foodpanda, across all the countries it serves, saw gross transaction volume hit EUR 9 million (US$11.3 million) in H1 2014, up 429 percent from the same period last year. It saw 1.34 million orders across its 13,300 restaurant partners.
Foodpanda global managing director Ralf Wenzel said in August โ when the service raised a fresh US$60 million in funding โ that the team aims to double its numbers in Asia this year so that it will soon have 20,000 restaurants and reach over 200 Asian cities.
Elsewhere in the world, Foodpanda and Delivery Hero today played swapsies with a bunch of sites. Foodpanda acquired Delivery Heroโs Mexican business, PedidosYa, while Delivery Hero acquired Rocketโs Hellofood businesses in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
