Citing App Annie data, Lazada CEO Pierre Poignant is claiming that his company was the top ecommerce app in Southeast Asia in 2018.
In a LinkedIn post, he shared a graphic from App Annie that ranks shopping apps by combined iPhone and Android monthly active users:
It’s a tit-for-tat response to Shopee’s declaration last year that it was number one in the region, although both companies are using different metrics to bolster their claims.
Looking at the rest of the top 10, Tokopedia and Bukalapak are the heavyweights in Indonesia, while Zalora remains popular despite staying low-key.
Classifieds app Carousell remains widely used, while US giants Amazon and eBay have not been able to overtake their Asian rivals.
App Annie is an app analytics platform that collects mobile usage data from a large sample of real-world users, combined with proprietary data sets. It’s used by Apple, Softbank, Tencent, and more as the source of truth in supporting their quarter earnings updates and IPO filings.
