Hong Kong-based Animoca Brands is bringing blockchain tech to football leagues through a joint venture with Germany-based media platform OneFootball and US-headquartered incubator Liberty City Ventures.

Called OneFootball Labs, the joint venture will enable football clubs, leagues, federations, and players to release blockchain-based digital assets. Fans will also be able to buy and store digital collectibles using their email address and a credit card.
Through the joint venture, Animoca Brands plans to use its network in blockchain, NFTs, gaming, and the metaverse to help OneFootball create new products and services and draw more revenue streams to the football industry.
Animoca Brands CEO Yat Siu will join the boards of both OneFootball and OneFootball Labs as part of the deal.
The announcement comes after OneFootball raised US$300 million in its series D funding round led by Liberty City Ventures. Animoca Brands also joined the round, along with Dapper Labs, DAH Beteiligungs, Quiet Capital, RIT Capital Partners, Senator Investment Group, and Alsara Investment Group.

OneFootball, which has over 100 million monthly active users, streams football matches from leagues and competitions globally.
“We believe the future of football away from the stands and off the pitch will be decentralized and built on Web3, giving back the ownership of data and digital assets to the fans,” said Lucas von Cranach, founder and CEO of OneFootball.
