A draft can make or break a Dota 2 game, especially when in captain’s mode. But there are some drafts that always do worse than others. Here are some of the kinds of drafters you tend to meet in-game.
1. The experimenter
This guy likes experimenting. He will present crazy ideas like sending Bounty Hunter mid against Storm Spirit, and will try to convince you that no one’s going to expect it. While the element of surprise is always helpful, it has to come with calculated risks. But you also have no reason to trust a drafter you’ve just met.
2. The control freak
Everyone will have to shut up and listen to him. He will draft this hero and you will have to play it exactly like he tells you to. No, he’s not going to ask if anyone can play Meepo or Invoker before picking it. He’ll just pick them, because he thinks that if you chose to play captain’s mode, then you’d damn well be able to play what the captain tells you to. It’s like this guy forgot this is just a pub captain’s mode and thinks he’s gunning for the International’s Aegis.
3. The meta worshipper
This guy will draft according to what he has learned from the pros and will also assume that his enemy is doing the same. To better communicate his strategy, he will tell you about teams, players, matches, and tournaments. Fortunately, you’d understand him if you actually followed the scene. If you don’t… good luck!
There are actually two variations of this drafter. The first type is open to drafting outside of the current meta game if the lineup makes sense. The second will refuse anything outside of the meta because “it’s not part of it!”. The second appears frequently enough to be annoying.
