Mistral AI targets major Singapore hiring push in 2026

Mistral AI is looking to increase its headcount in Singapore from 40 to 100 by the end of 2026, as the French tech unicorn continues to expand its Southeast Asian presence in Singapore.

CEO Arthur Mensch said the firm will be looking to hire a mix of engineers as well as sales and operations staff in a move that will cement Singapore as a hub for the company in the region.

“Singapore is a great place to hire from,” he told The Business Times, noting that the firm seeks to primarily employ local talent.

To ensure the smooth transfer of knowledge and competency, Mistral will bring in employees from its European office to guide the Singapore team.

Established in 2023, the Paris-based startup, valued at 11.7 billion euros (US$13.6 billion), develops large language models with both open-source and proprietary AI models that can carry out tasks, such as agentic workflow and software development.

Its recent releases include a lightweight text-to-speech model and cloud-powered coding agents. In addition to API sales, Mistral also offers to customize models for enterprises.

The firm set up operations in Singapore in January 2025, specializing in AI sovereignty, which enables its models to be deployed on its customer’s own servers.

Mensch said the majority of Mistral’s customers in Singapore are organizations in the public sector and financial services.

He declined to cite a specific figure, but noted that Mistral has already invested “multiple dozens of millions of dollars” into its Singapore operations.

This sum – along with the client base Mistral has built – makes Singapore its biggest market in the Asia Pacific, surpassing larger markets such as Australia and South Korea, Mensch said.

Growing its regional footprint

Mistral’s presence in Southeast Asian markets such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia is limited, but Mensch said the company is looking to expand further in the region.

Building on its expertise in AI sovereignty, the company is targeting sectors such as manufacturing and financial services across Southeast Asia.

The region’s cultural diversity has its challenges, but the CEO said the firm is equipped to navigate them.
