Working on an industry landscape map is pretty straightforward: We track fundraising data and often get enough information from secondary research.
What made our piece on insurtech firms more challenging was figuring out if these startups are still in business – those who successfully raise funds make big announcements, but those going out of business generally don’t. Figuring this out involves a fair bit of stalking: When was a company’s website last updated? What do the founders’ and employees’ LinkedIn profiles say? What year was the company last mentioned in the news?
Inevitably, we do miss out on some names when writing these landscape maps. For days after an article is published, we receive emails from founders and companies who were not mentioned.
These maps are not perfect, but we hope that you find them useful and informative.
