This past week was huge for Nintendo, but not nearly as big as expected. Nintendo has taken nine of the top ten spots in this week’s sales chart, but I have to imagine the people behind Donkey Kong are more than just a little disappointed.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze came out last week for the Wii U and immediately sold 43,000 copies. That may be good enough to take the number two slot on the chart, but in reality it is a major disappointment when you consider the last Donkey Kong game sold over 100,000 copies in its first week.
What’s more of a shock for me is the longevity of some of the games that are on this list. Pokemon X and Y, Puzzle and Dragons Z, and even Youkai Watch have been on this list for well over a month now. Youkai Watch was released last summer, and has reportedly sold over 400,000 copies since its release. Not bad, but nothing compared to Dragon Quest Monsters 2 which has sold 540,000 copies in its first two weeks. Nintendo’s got to be happy about that.
I fear this week may be the last time Nintendo rules the sales charts though. The PS4 will finally be released in Japan this weekend, and with it comes a host of launch titles that will surely fill up next week’s top ten.
