Indian edtech unicorn Vedantu has laid off 200 teachers as part of its cost-cutting measures, reported The Economic Times.
About 120 of the fired employees were contractual while 80 were full-time staff.
The development comes as offline learning centers have begun opening up in India, bringing down the demand for online learning. The platform is also trimming the cost of its courses via AI and voice synthesis as well as content development.
“With more technology intervention, restructuring of the class format, and changes in the categories, we relook at these roles of our academics and assistant teachers,” a Vedantu spokesperson told The Economic Times.
In April, SoftBank-backed edtech player Unacademy laid off at least 600 employees for similar reasons.
