Google, Tata Trusts, and Udacity today announced the launch of an Android Nanodegree program in India. Google and Udacity will also give 1,000 free scholarships to mobile developers.
Nanodegree courses include topics like tech entrepreneurship, full stack development, and data analysis. Nanodegree certifications are accepted by a number of major companies, including Facebook, Google, and Salesforce. In India, however, they are only recognized by Google.
Courses are taught by instructors from the Google Developer Relations team and include features like project reviews and mentorship. Tuition costs are affordably priced for the Indian market at INR 9800 (US$150). Udacity also launched an initiative where it will refund half of the tuition costs for those who finish their course within 12 months.
“I went to MIT several years ago but I may have just gotten a nanodegree if I had a chance,” said Rajan Anandan, VP of Google Southeast Asia and India. “Too bad Sebastian [founder of Udacity] wasn’t around at the time.”
Google also announced a career summit for 30 of the best graduates from the program in Bangalore, to be held next year.
India currently has the second highest concentration of developers in the world and, as Anandan explains, has the potential to reach 4 million developers by 2018 – the most in the world.
