Edtech’s new niche in Indonesia: teaching the teachers

With over 53 million school pupils and 9.3 million university students, Indonesia presents a vast market for edtech startups.

While most players in the sector have historically targeted students, a growing number are pivoting to a promising niche: teachers.

There were around 51 edtech companies in Indonesia as of July 2024, according to data from Tech in Asia Indonesia. Nearly two-thirds of these startups focus on online learning services, while others cater to schools or other segments.

One notable player in the teacher-focused space is GuruInovatif

Dwita Nurcahyani, head of digital marketing and production, says GuruInovatif has been committed to providing training for teachers since its inception in 2020. Boosting teachers’ competency helps them deliver more effective and higher-quality education to students, she adds.

Targeting teachers means tapping into a vast and underserved market. “There are millions of teachers across Indonesia. By focusing on this segment, we can reach a broad audience and design tailored training programs to meet their needs,” Nurcahyani notes.

Teachers’ aide

GuruInovatif offers an integrated platform that allows teachers to access educational materials, participate in online training, and track their learning progress.

Nurcahyani says that many teachers in Indonesia face challenges in adapting to changes in curriculum and technologies, highlighting an urgent need for skills development.

Given how disruptive generative AI programs like OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been to the education landscape, teachers must also prepare to leverage these tools effectively. The company recently released a free online course to help K-12 educators use ChatGPT in a classroom setting.

However, there’s still room for culturally tailored materials from local startups that can better address Indonesia’s unique educational context and needs.

GuruInovatif’s data indicates that out of Indonesia’s approximately 2.7 million digitally literate teachers, about 2.2 million reside in urban areas – the company’s primary market.
