China’s Meituan has started hiring in Hong Kong as domestic food delivery growth begins to plateau, Bloomberg reported.
Barclays’ Jiong Shao told Bloomberg that he saw “limited growth potential” in China for food delivery as the country has reopened.
Other firms battling in China’s food delivery space include veteran Ele.me and newcomer Douyin, the Chinese version of ByteDance’s TikTok, which trialed its own delivery service last year.
In Hong Kong, Meituan could award drivers an additional HK$2,500 (US$319) if they complete their target order volume within two weeks, according to a PingWest report.
The Chinese firm logged US$170.6 million in profits in Q3 2022 from a loss in the same year-ago quarter.
It was reported as early as 2021 that Meituan had set its sights on Hong Kong. Foodpanda and Deliveroo are currently leading the food delivery market in the city, according to Statista.
