Tencent launches its automatic subtitling solution for international markets

Tencent’s cloud computing business Tencent Cloud has introduced its own speech recognition and automatic subtitle generation solution for its international customers.

Called AI Transfy, the service can be used in cases such as livestreaming, e-learning, conferences, news, and broadcast entertainment. It currently supports languages such as Chinese, English, Malay, Indonesian, and Thai, the company said in a statement.

According to Tencent, its team recently won the championship in Interspeech 2020’s special session, Far-Field Speaker Verification Challenge, held in China, which aims to benchmark current speech verification technology and accelerate development within the industry.

“There has been a strong growth in virtual conferences this year, making it even more important for us as a leading internet service provider to keep up with customers’ ever-changing needs,” said Tencent International Business Group vice president Poshu Yeung.

Recently, Tencent Cloud offered to use AI Transfy for professional translation tasks such as the interpretation and subtitling for the 4th World Intelligence Congress held in June this year. It also provided technical assistance to the 127th China Import and Export Fair, the longest-running international trading event in the country.

The introduction of the service comes weeks after Tencent announced its financial report for the third quarter of FY 2020. During the period, the Chinese tech titan said it generated revenues of 125.4 billion yuan (US$18.9 billion), a 29% year-on-year increase from 97.2 billion yuan.

The company said its value-added services, which include online games and social networks, contributed more than half of the total revenue.
