In January and February each year, there would be a surge in dating app downloads and online dating profiles created, fuelled by singles hoping to land a hot date just in time for Valentine’s Day.

If you’re anything like the millions of dating app users and online dating platform users out there, you might be familiar with this scenario:

You download a dating app. As you input your email and particulars, you feel a frisson of hope and excitement. Who knows who you’ll meet? The app prompts you to upload a profile picture. You scroll through the album on your phone, selecting your most flattering picture, even though it was taken 1 year and 5 kilograms ago.

Stop right there. Singaporean dating app LunchClick has recently published its survey findings, which indicate that your date is pretty likely to hold it against you if you look like a heavier, more washed-up version of your profile picture during the first meetup.

These findings are understandable — as much as everyone wants to present the best side of themselves, no one wants to be catfished and receive a nasty shock when they meet their date offline for the first time.
